Driving Sustainable Aquaculture: A Shared Vision by Lago Sofía Circular Food and the Scottish Government

A Shared Vision by Lago Sofía Circular Food and the Scottish Government

At Lago Sofía Circular Food, we are proud to share a significant milestone in our mission to promote sustainable aquaculture. Recently, during the AquaSur aquaculture fair, we had the honor of welcoming the Scottish Minister for Rural Affairs, Land Reform and Islands, Mairi Gougeon, along with a distinguished government delegation. This visit allowed us to showcase how we blend innovation, sustainability, and animal welfare in our daily practices.

From our facilities in Puerto Montt, alongside our CEO Miguel Portus O., we demonstrated how our commitment to health and animal welfare translates into concrete actions. We explored our fish farms and highlighted our advanced individual Recirculating Aquaculture System (iRAS) and our sludge treatment plant, both key elements in our approach to sustainable aquaculture.

Innovation and Sustainability in Aquaculture
The visit by the Scottish delegation was an excellent opportunity to highlight our advanced technologies and animal welfare practices. At Lago Sofía Circular Food, we utilize the iRAS system, an innovative method that allows efficient water recirculation, reducing environmental impact and improving the quality of life for our fish. Our sludge treatment plant also plays a crucial role in responsible waste management, aligning with our sustainability goals.

International Collaboration for a Sustainable Future
We also celebrate our participation in the BlueBridge program, which facilitates technological exchange between Chile and the United Kingdom. We are excited to represent Chile at Aquaculture UK, where we will present our technological solutions and strengthen international collaboration for a more sustainable aquaculture.

Minister Gougeon highlighted the shared values between Scotland and Lago Sofía, emphasizing that industry growth must go hand in hand with environmental protection and community involvement. This meeting reinforces our commitment to leading initiatives that drive responsible aquaculture development.

Commitment to a Thriving Aquaculture Future
At Lago Sofía, we are convinced that sustainability and animal welfare are essential pillars for the future of the aquaculture industry. Collaboration and knowledge exchange with international partners allow us to move towards a more sustainable and prosperous future. Our commitment to sustainable aquaculture is reflected in every step we take, working together to build a responsible and environmentally friendly industry.

We thank Minister Gougeon and the delegation, including Rural Affairs Secretary Rahul Singh, Special Advisor Kate Higgins, Deputy Director for Communities and Marine Economy Malcolm Pentland, and Head of Aquaculture Development Jill Barber, for their visit and support of our mission.
