During our participation in the Latin American Animal Welfare Meeting, ELBA 2026, we shared the experience we have developed at our fish farm and a conviction that guides our work: to improve the welfare of our fish, we need to observe, measure, and make data-driven decisions.

Our model considers different indicators related to feeding, density, water quality, fin and gill condition, mortality, pathogen surveillance, and other parameters that allow us to carry out a continuous assessment of farming conditions.

But the challenge goes beyond our own operation.

As an industry, moving toward common animal welfare criteria and standards in RAS systems will make it possible to generate comparable information, strengthen good practices, and continue raising the standards of Chilean aquaculture.

For us, technology, production efficiency, and animal welfare are part of the same vision: producing better, while caring for every stage of the process.

What role do you believe land-based cultivation technology and individual recirculation systems play in the national strategy for a more resilient and biosecure aquaculture?

“It is a necessary step within the aquaculture process, but what we are seeing here is the standard that aquaculture must aim for in the future: the incubation, the health management, the way the tanks operate… it really is a very impressive standard. It is an example from Puerto Montt and southern Chile to the world.”

How is work being done so that technical regulations do not lag behind innovations such as the circular economy?

“We are open to receiving proposals from the private sector, so that new standards of innovation and technology that can benefit the entire sector can gradually be included and incorporated, including what we are seeing here in this fish farm.”

During February, a successful training session was conducted for part of the staff on exposure to UV rays, which reach their highest levels during this time of the year. The workshop was led by the Prevention Department and covered topics such as the negative effects of UV radiation on health and preventive measures, including constant hydration, wearing legionnaire-style hats or helmets, using UV-filtering sunglasses, and applying sunscreen to exposed areas of the body.
